Phonics

• High-quality, systematic phonics teaching that enables all pupils to develop secure phonic knowledge, read with accuracy and fluency, and foster a lifelong love of reading.
• Daily lessons, targeted support, and strong partnerships with parents and carers to ensure that every child, including those with SEND and disadvantaged pupils, is supported to achieve their full potential.
• By the end of Key Stage 1, we aim for all children to be confident readers who can access the wider curriculum successfully and enjoy reading for pleasure.

In Nursery we provide a language-rich environment where children develop their speaking and listening skills, build a broad vocabulary, and learn to tune into sounds around them.

Children will:

• Develop phonological awareness through high-quality interactions, stories, songs, rhymes and play-based experiences.
• Recognise and explore rhythm and rhyme in a range of familiar texts and songs.
• Identify, discriminate and talk about different sounds in the environment and in spoken language.
• Engage in oral blending and segmenting activities to develop early phonics skills.
• Strengthen listening, attention and communication skills through carefully planned learning experiences.
• Build the foundations needed for the systematic teaching of phonics and early reading.
• Develop confidence and readiness for Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised in Reception.

• Participate in daily, systematic phonics lessons following the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme.
• Learn and apply grapheme-phoneme correspondences through carefully sequenced teaching.
• Develop the ability to blend sounds to read words and segment words for spelling.
• Build phonics knowledge progressively, enabling increasing confidence and accuracy in reading and writing.
• Take part in regular reading practice sessions using fully decodable books matched to their phonics knowledge.
• Develop fluency, comprehension and confidence through repeated reading of familiar texts.
  Receive regular assessment and targeted keep-up support to ensure they remain on track with their learning.
• Apply phonics knowledge independently across reading and writing activities.
• Develop positive attitudes towards reading through engaging texts and successful reading experiences.
• Build the skills, confidence and enthusiasm needed for continued success in Key Stage 1.

• Participate in daily phonics lessons following the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme.
• Take part in regular reading practice sessions using fully decodable books matched to their phonics knowledge.
• Consolidate previously taught grapheme-phoneme correspondences and learn more complex spelling patterns.
• Develop accuracy and automaticity when decoding unfamiliar words.
• Apply phonics knowledge confidently in reading and writing.
• Receive regular assessment and timely keep-up support to remain on track.
• Secure the phonics knowledge and decoding skills needed to meet the expectations of the Phonics Screening Check.
• Become fluent, confident readers who are ready to transition from learning to read to reading to learn.
