Teaching history at St Mark’s

History at St Marks aims to be ambitious, and motivating. Ambitious through our coverage and thorough teaching of Historical skills, and motivating through engaging activities, trips and visitors that give all students an opportunity to acquire a deep knowledge of and ability to question and understand the past. Pupils in Years 1-6 will be taught History in one lesson each week through half termly units. Our History curriculum has been designed to cover all of the skills, knowledge and understanding as set out in the National Curriculum and to ensure topics and concepts are built on from year to year.  Through the History curriculum we aim to inspire pupils to want to know more about the past and to act and think as historians. We want children to develop an enthusiasm and fascination for the world around them and how and why things change over time, including themselves and the world around them. We aim for children to explore their own past and present lives and the lives of their family and over time build a coherent picture of key events, people and places from British and world history. Through our core value, ‘Who are We?’, History at St. Mark’s will develop every students’ cultural capital through exploring the world around them and their own heritage.
