Oracy at St Mark’s

At St Mark’s, we place oracy at the heart of our curriculum because we believe that the ability to communicate confidently, clearly and respectfully is a vital life skill. Through a structured and inclusive approach to spoken language, we aim to ensure that every child becomes a thoughtful speaker, an active listener and an effective communicator.

• Inclusion: all children are supported to develop their voice. Pupils with SEND and those new to English are given targeted support and opportunities to rehearse language so they can fully participate.
• Across the curriculum: oracy is embedded in every subject. Children learn through discussion, debate, storytelling, presentations, drama and collaborative group work. They are taught to express their ideas, reason, ask questions and listen to others with respect.
• Progression: oracy is taught explicitly and developed progressively from the early years through to Year 6. Pupils build their confidence through paired talk, group discussion and class debate, moving on to more formal presentations, performances and critical questioning as they grow.
• Impact: strong oracy skills support children in their writing, reading and wider learning, while also preparing them for life beyond primary school. By the time they leave St Mark’s, pupils can communicate with confidence and empathy in a range of settings.
