Teaching PSHE at St Mark’s

At St Mark’s PSHE is at the core of what we do and enables our children to become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society. PSHE supports the school’s core curriculum values in teaching the fundamental building blocks and characteristics of positive relationships, with particular reference to friendships, family relationships, and relationships with other children and with adults. Throughout their primary school education our curriculum ensures that all children are learning the skills and developing the  understanding that will help them make informed decisions about their well being, health and relationships  so that they are able to address the challenges of having a happy and successful life now, and as a future as global citizens.

Implementation

The majority of our PSHE content is taught through the Revised Ealing scheme of work. The programme is taught every week, from Reception to year 6, which over time enhances the personal, social, emotional and economic wellbeing and happiness of our school community and supports children’s mental health.  Each termly theme is introduced through an assembly  at the end of which a further assembly helps pupils to reflect on the learning completed. Children complete a wide range of activities on each theme and have time to reflect on their new learning. The protected characteristics are embedded in each lesson. Each week learning related to the theme will be discussed and presented in a variety of ways including stories, pictures, videos.  Pupils take part in lessons through discussions, reflections and collaborative group and partner work. Wherever possible teachers will link PSHE to learning in other curriculum areas including PE, RE and Science.

Impact

By the time children leave our school they will have a ready willingness and ability to try new things, push themselves and persevere as well as a strong sense of self-awareness, interlinked with compassion of others. Pupils will have a good understanding of how to stay safe, healthy and develop good relationships and an appreciation of what it means to be a positive member of a diverse, multicultural society. Children will recognise if relationships are making them unhappy or unsafe  and feel confident seeking help and leave St. Mark’s prepared for the Secondary school RSHE curriculum.
