History
In History this half term, we are exploring Tudor Britain. Pupils learnt how in that period, the British were exploring lands around the world. Year 2 learnt that historians have found record of hundreds of Africans living in Tudor England. One famous African Tudor was Jacques Francis who was an expert swimmer and free diver. This meant that he was able to hold his breath for a long time and dive down to the seabed. Jacques was born on the coast of West Africa.
English
In English, Year 2 has begun the unit on poetry with the book Apes to Zebras: An A to Z of Shape poems. Pupils are exploring shape poetry- poems written in the shape of the animal which they describe. This week, pupils learnt about alliteration, the repetition of sounds in a verse of poetry, as well as similes, comparing two things using the words ‘like’ and as.’ Year 2 children made posters about similes to put up on the English Working Walls.
Maths
In Year 2 Maths, children learned about UK money and how to calculate change. They practised finding change in real-life contexts, such as paying with a £1 coin for a 44p item or paying for £12 worth of items using a £20 note. The children then moved on to solving two-step problems, where they first added the prices of several items and then worked out the correct change after payment, developing their confidence and problem-solving skills.
