Welcome to Key Stage 1

All you need to know about life in Year 1 and Year 2.

Key Stage 1 is the next step in your child’s school career now that they have completed the Early Years Foundation Stage. As they enter Year 1 much of the structure and routine of Reception is kept in place to ensure a smooth transition for your child. This transition phase will last for several weeks until the children are settled and we feel that they are ready for some more structured lessons.

The children in both Year 1 and 2 are taught the National Curriculum. We develop topics which teach the foundation subjects: History, Geography, Art, Design and Technology. In addition to this we try and make as many links with our learning across the whole curriculum as possible, including, where appropriate, the core subjects English, Maths and Science. In Year 1 children are systematically taught phonics through Letters and Sounds. To support all of our teaching we will plan workshops and trips aimed at deepening understanding and giving children memorable learning experiences.

In Key Stage 1 we strive to develop learners who are resilient and have a stamina for learning. It is a time of growth for children who are still new to school life when they enter in Year 1 but leave Year 2 ready for the challenges of Key Stage 2 and beyond.
